The Central Government has sanctioned an additional financial assistance of Rs. 288.93 crore to the state of Tripura as part of relief efforts for the devastating floods that struck the region last year. The funds have been approved under the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) to aid the state in recovering from the extensive damages caused by the natural calamity.

Severe Flooding and Assessment of Damages

In August 2023, Tripura witnessed catastrophic flooding, leading to widespread destruction across multiple districts. The estimated financial loss incurred by the state stood at approximately Rs. 15,000 crore, impacting infrastructure, agriculture, and the livelihoods of thousands of residents.

Following the disaster, the Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) conducted an on-ground assessment of the flood-affected areas to evaluate the extent of damage and the urgent need for assistance. Based on their findings, the High-Level Committee (HLC), under the chairmanship of Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Amit Shah, reviewed the situation and sanctioned additional financial aid.

Approval of Central Assistance to Five States

On Wednesday, February 14, 2024, the HLC approved a total Rs. 1,554.99 crore in additional Central assistance to five states affected by floods, flash floods, landslides, and cyclonic storms in the year 2024. The allocation of funds under the NDRF is as follows:

  • Andhra Pradesh: Rs. 608.08 crore

  • Nagaland: Rs. 170.99 crore

  • Odisha: Rs. 255.24 crore

  • Telangana: Rs. 231.75 crore

  • Tripura: Rs. 288.93 crore

Tripura CM Thanks PM and HM for Support

Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, during his recent visit to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, discussed the severity of the flood damages and the urgent requirement for financial aid to help the state recover. He expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for their unwavering support and prompt approval of relief assistance.

"This additional central assistance will be a boon for the disaster-affected people in our state. The Rs. 288.93 crore allocated to Tripura will significantly contribute to rebuilding infrastructure, restoring livelihoods, and continuing the developmental projects that were hindered due to the devastating floods. I wholeheartedly thank PM Narendra Modi and HM Amit Shah for always standing by Tripura in times of crisis," Dr. Saha wrote in a social media post.

Central Government’s Commitment to Disaster Relief

According to a Press Information Bureau (PIB) press release, the approval of additional funds reflects the Central Government’s strong commitment to supporting states affected by natural disasters. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government has been actively working to ensure rapid relief and rehabilitation measures.

This additional financial assistance comes over and above the regular allocations made under the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF). As per the financial records for the 2024-25 fiscal year, the Central Government has disbursed:

  • Rs. 18,322.80 crore to 27 states under the SDRF.

  • Rs. 4,808.30 crore from the NDRF to 18 states.

  • Rs. 2,208.55 crore from the State Disaster Mitigation Fund (SDMF) to 14 states.

  • Rs. 719.72 crore from the National Disaster Mitigation Fund (NDMF) to 8 states.

With these measures, the Central Government aims to ensure quick response, effective rehabilitation, and long-term resilience building for states grappling with the adverse impacts of natural calamities.
